People are always asking me for referrals or recommendations for photographers in their area. Since I’m based out of the Cincinnati area and specialize in newborn photography, I wanted you all to get the chance to know some amazing photographers in different parts of the country! Kristy Hall, owner of Kristy Hall Photography, is located in Des Moines, Iowa and specializes in Newborn Photography. Here is a short interview that I did with her the other day along with a photo of her and her beautiful family (Photo Credit Sugar Hill Photography)…

Kristy Hall Photography: I am from Adel, Iowa, born and raised. I have basically lived all over the country, but when it came time to raise my children, I wanted to be in Central Iowa

Cream n CocoaWhen did you first pick up a camera?

K: I remember my mom buying me a camera at our church garage sale when I was probably in 2nd grade. I have a bunch of pictures of me and my childhood best friend posing with a stuffed gorilla, and just being silly. I got my first NEW camera when I was in 4th grade. My grandma gave me a Le Clic camera for Christmas and I was in love!

I bought my first DSLR when my daughter was born, so almost eight years ago. I knew I wanted to capture her beauty and have tangible memories of her childhood

CIf you had to pick one thing to shoot for the rest of your career what would it be?

K: If I had to choose only one subject for the rest of my career, it would be newborns. It is just such an amazing time families, and to be a smart part of their joy has been a blessing to me. I will say that newborn photography is incredibly physically demanding, so as a 40 year-old I will be cutting back on how many newborn sessions I do a month. But I love outside family sessions almost as much as I love newborn sessions!

CDo you travel for sessions?

K: I stay within the Greater Des Moines area for sessions. All of my newborn families come to my studio in Adel, as it has been customized to cater to newborn sessions. My families are comfortable in my 1,000 square foot studio, and everything we need for their baby’s session is at my fingertips! For family and maternity sessions, I have numerous outside locations around Des Moines that are amazing. Most of my outside sessions are within 30 minutes of Des Moines.

CWhat is the biggest challenge you face as a photographer?

K: My biggest challenge as a photographer is my work-life balance. There is always “something” I could be working on as a photographer and business owner (updating my website, blogging, sewing newborn outfits, organizing the studio, etc.) but my family comes first. I have worked hard over the years to find balance, but it is something I have to stay focused on and be aware of how my time is spent!

CAnything else you would like people to know about you or photography?

K: I guess I want people to know I am passionate about my work. I work really hard to give my families an amazing experience!
