My blog posting has been behind while I catch up on fall/holiday photos; however, I wanted to take a brief moment to write this post. This fall has been interesting to say the least. On Saturdays, there were more photographers out than ever before – it was mind boggling. Facebook, especially, is loaded with tons of mediocre (and even just plain bad) fall family photos. Now believe me, I am as guilty as any photographer of taking (what I consider) mediocre photos. I’ve taken tons of “nice” family photos that are great for the mantle and Christmas cards but they are not especially interesting or moving.
This year, I began to feel like I was in a slump. I had learned as much as I could on my own photography wise, so I decided to mentor with an amazing photographer, Shelley Paulson. I learned more from her in two days than I was able to learn on my own in almost two years. It was so eye opening! I felt like I had been looking at photos all wrong! I wanted to learn more about making my photos special without relying on some action in Photoshop (let’s face it – anyone can do that). Overexposure, poor lighting, and over processing run rampent in photography these days and there are many photos out there to prove it. I’m not looking to be “the” best – just “my” best. I want to do everything I can do to take technically sound images as well as more images that speak to people through what they capture.
I’m very excited about 2012 because I’ll be making some changes in how my sessions work so that I can tell more stories through photography, use beautiful light, and gain more balance in my life. My focus will still be on newborns, babies, children and families but but I’m hopeful that the changes I begin to make will lead to my best photography yet! Thanks so much to Shelley Paulson for your guidance as well as to my friend Corrie, a local photographer who I know I can always trust if I have a question. Also a big thank you to all of my wonderful clients! I will be sending out an email in January about the new sessions and I hope you will be as excited as I am! I think there will be a little something for everyone! 🙂
