If you’ve ever tried to plan outfits for your family photos in Cincinnati or Dayton family photos, you may already know that this is where things can spiral a little.
You start with a simple idea like “neutral and timeless,” and suddenly you’re standing in your closet wondering why nothing looks right, your partner is asking if jeans are okay (again), and your kids are lobbying hard for their favorite neon shirt with a dinosaur riding a skateboard.
Deep breath and keep reading.

Why Outfits Make or Break Your Family Photos in Cincinnati
I say this with love: outfits can make or break a photo.
Not in a “you need to be perfectly styled” way but in a “what you wear directly impacts how your photos feel” way.
The right outfits:
- Help your images feel cohesive and calm
- Keep the focus on connection instead of distraction
- Elevate your photos from “quick snapshot” to “frame this immediately”
The wrong outfits? They can pull attention in all the wrong directions. Bright logos, clashing patterns, or colors that fight each other will show up in your final images (and not in a subtle way).
When I photograph family photos in Cincinnati, I’m not just looking at light and location. I’m also paying attention to how everything visually comes together and your outfits are part of the story.
The Color Palette Approach: Coordinate Don’t Match
Let’s officially retire the idea that everyone needs to wear the exact same color.
Matching outfits had a moment (in the 90s and occasionally now but under very specific circumstances)… and we’re going to gently leave it there.
Instead, think in terms of a color palette.
Choose 2-4 colors that work well together, then let each family member wear something within that palette. This creates a coordinated look without feeling stiff or overly planned. Also, this way you can even mix and match patterns if you like.
Here are a few go-to muted palettes I love for Cincinnati family photo sessions:
- Cream, soft beige, and warm brown
- Dusty blue, ivory, and light gray
- Olive green, tan, and soft white
- Muted blush, taupe, and cream
The key word here is muted. Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully and are a safe bet for most types of photos.
If muted isn’t for you, AWESOME! There are so many fun bright color pairings. The easiest thing is to head over to Pinterest and search “colorful family photo outfits” and start pinning your favs.
Also, don’t stress about getting it perfect! The goal isn’t “Pinterest board perfection.” It’s “everyone looks good and feels like themselves, just slightly elevated.”

What to Avoid (Patterns, Logos, Neon, Matching PJs)
Okay… this is the part where I gently save you from future regret.
There are a few things that almost always distract in photos, no matter how cute they seem in real life.
Big logos or graphics
They pull attention immediately. Your eye goes straight to the shirt instead of the people.
Neon colors
These reflect onto skin (yes, really – you could look like an Oompa Loompa) and can create color casts that are hard to fix. That bright green shirt? It might turn your whole photo slightly… green.
Everyone in the exact same outfit
Matching white shirts and jeans had their era. Now it can feel dated and a little stiff.
Character outfits (I know, I know)
Save those for everyday life. They CAN work if you’re doing a session that is specifically about capturing more of a lifestyle vibe and capturing a child’s personality, but for family photos, we want something a bit more timeless.
Seasonal Outfit Ideas for Family Photos in Cincinnati
One of the best parts about living in Cincinnati (and serving Dayton families too) is that we actually get seasons. And each one brings its own vibe to your photos.
Here’s how I guide families depending on the time of year:
Spring (March–May)
Think light, bright and fresh.
- Flowy dresses for moms
- Khakis or light denim for dads
- Soft pastels, bright spring colors (like pink or yellow) or neutrals
- Layers like light cardigans or denim jackets (layers are super important because the temperatures can fluctuate greatly in the spring)
Summer (June–August)
Keep it breathable and relaxed.
- Avoid anything too heavy or clingy because Cincinnati humidity is not here to help your outfit choices.
- Short-sleeve button-downs or henleys
- Barefoot or simple sandals
- I usually tell people to avoid pastels after spring unless we are going to a location that has specific colors (a building or mural for instance).
Fall (September–November)
This is peak family photos in Cincinnati season for a reason.
- Warm tones like rust, olive, mustard, and cream
- Sweaters, boots, and textured fabrics
- Layers (always layers)
- Darker denim or neutral pants
Winter (December–February)
Simple, clean, and a little elevated.
- Neutral coats (camel, gray, black)
- Knit sweaters
- Soft scarves
- Pops of bright gem colors with the neutrals (bright red, emerald, or purple)
- Dressier pieces if you want a more polished feel
Winter photos can feel incredibly timeless when outfits stay minimal and intentional.

What Jackie Recommends for Her Sessions
If you’re sitting there thinking, “This all sounds great, but I still don’t know what to put everyone in,” you are very much not alone.
This is exactly why I help guide families through styling when you book with me.
When you schedule your session with me (serving Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio), I don’t just send you a date and say “good luck.” I can walk you through outfit ideas, help you refine your color palette, and make sure everything comes together in a way that feels effortless.
A few things I personally love for sessions:
- Dresses for moms that move (they photograph beautifully)
- Outfits that allow you to move, sit, and interact comfortably
- A slightly elevated version of your everyday style
Remember: your photos aren’t just about what you look like. They’re about how it felt to be together in that moment.
And when you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows in every single image.
